A new streaming service focused on LGBTQ women and nonbinary people is set to launch globally later this year.
DivaBoxOffice.tv — the result of a partnership between the Diva Media Group (DMG), A Baker Production and Tello Films founder Christin Baker — will be available on major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Roku and Amazon Firestick starting on Dec. 1.
“The demand for queer programming is only growing with each generation becoming increasingly more fluid in their sexual orientations and gender identities than ever before,” Baker, who will serve as the streamers’ president and CEO, told the Daily News in a statement.
Linda Riley, publisher of DMG — a U.K.-based entertainment group behind the popular podcast podDIVA, the annual DIVA Awards and the U.K.-based magazine Diva — added that their mission is to “uplift, entertain and inform” as the group expands its global reach.
“We are excited to partner with A Baker Production to continue to bring the best in queer entertainment to the lesbian, bisexual and trans community with content produced in the U.S.,” Riley said.
The service — priced at $6.99 per month or $59.99 annually — will debut with an initial library of more than 100 contemporary LGBTQ titles, including feature films, shorts and other programming.
It also plans to produce four original films or series per year, “as well as aggressively acquire original programming from other queer filmmakers,” according to a news release.
“As the old adage goes, we are queer and we’re here to stay,” Baker said.
Highlights from its initial programming include the premieres of the limited horror series “Scare B&B” and “Merry & Gay,” a queer Christmas movie directed and co-written by Baker and starring Dia Frampton and Andi René Christensen — who’s considered the first nonbinary actor to play the lead in a holiday rom-com.
