Streaking naked to refusing awards - Oscars madness as Will Smith slaps Chris Rock

Will Smith caused a storm at the Oscars by hittting comedian Chris Rock after the comedian joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

The incident, which appears not to have been staged, stunned an uncomfortable audience before Smith went on to win the Best Actor award mere moments later.

Rock made a joke at Jada's expense and all seemed fine as the King Richard actor laughed it off, before seconds later appearing on stage to slap Rock.

The audience, unsure as to whether the incident was a joke, laughed as the comedian shakily quipped: "Will Smith just slapped the s**t out of me."

Silence fell but for a few audible gasps as an angry-looking Smith ranted for the audience to hear: "Keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth."

It isn't the only Oscars moment to have gone down in history over the years. Here's a look back at the most memorable.

Why did Will Smith slap Chris Rock?

Will Smith hit Chris Rock after seeming to take offence at a joke made at wife Jada's expense, referencing her battle with hair loss.

Chris said: "Jada, love you, G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it."

The joke was a reference to the 1997 film G.I. Jane, starring a bald Demi Moore.

Will initially appeared to take the joke well, while Jada remained stony-faced. Only moments later, Will struck Chris across the face in front of an amazed crowd.

Upon accepting his award for Best Actor, Will said: "Love will make you do crazy things."

In a statement, The Academy said: "The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world."

Will and Jada, who suffers from alopecia, have had a rocky relationship at times since they met on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1994.

Rumours of divorce swirled in 2015, which were squashed by Will, before an infamous interview on Jada's Red Table Talk in 2021 in which the pair spoke about their sex life and her affair with rapper August Alsina.

Jada said: "From there, as time went on, I got into a different kind of entanglement with August...Yes, it was a relationship absolutely."

Jennifer Lawrence fall

There are times in our lives when we imagine what it would be like to finally gain recognition for our life's work. Jennifer Lawrence probably didn't imagine falling over when that moment came.

The 2013 Best Actress winner was on her way to collect her award but tripped up on the stairs.

She received a standing ovation when she eventually collected her award and laughed at the accident.

Jennifer said to the audience: "You're only standing up because I fell on the stairs."

David Niven upstaged by a streaker

Few things can upstage the unwavering coolness of James Bond, not even some loosely paraded genitals.

Artist and gay rights activist

Robert Opel stormed the stage

and ran across it naked as host David Niven was introducing Elizabeth Taylor at the Oscars in 1974.

Undisturbed, Niven said: "Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?"

La La Land accidentally 'wins' Oscar

At the 2017 Oscars, the wrong name for one of the show's most prestigious awards was read out when La La Land was accidentally announced as the winner ahead of Moonlight.

Winning the Oscar for Best Picture is surely the summit for any film director or producer out there, and the cast and crew of musical hit La La Land thought they had achieved just that.

The card given to presenters Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway was a mistake and meant that La La Land was read out as the winner.

An embarrassing correction moments later revealed coming-of-age drama film Moonlight was the actual winner.

Making light of the moment, host Jimmy Kimmel said: "I knew I would screw this show up. I really did."

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins said: "Things just happen. The folks from La La Land were so gracious. I can’t imagine being in their position."

Marlon Brando refuses award

After one of the most iconic performances in one of the most famous films in history, Marlon Brando refused to accept the award for Best Actor at the Oscars in 1973.

After receiving huge acclaim for his role at Vito Corleone in The Godfather, Brando's award came as no surprise, but he sent Native American civil rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather to accept the award in his place.

Brando cited the treatment of Native Americans by the film industry as the reason for turning down the award in a statement, as Littlefeather was audibly booed on stage.

Brando wrote: "The motion picture community has been as responsible as any for degrading the Indian and making a mockery of his character, describing him as savage, hostile and evil."
