Stranger Things fans have all said the same thing after Netflix has confirmed a new animated spin-off series is officially in development. On Monday (April 10), Stranger Things’ creators The Duffer Brothers released a statement confirming they are working on the untitled project, which is set to be “in the vein of Saturday morning cartoons” the duo grew up with.
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling,” Matt and Ross Duffer said.
Plot details are yet to be unveiled and it is unclear if any of the characters from the live-action series will feature. The Duffers will executive produce the new series via their Upside Down Pictures production banner, along with The Adam Project director Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps and Eric Robles of Flying Bark Productions.

“We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with,” The Duffers added. “The scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
But fans of Netflix’s flagship sci-fi series have been less enthusiastic following the announcement, with many accusing the streaming giant of “milking” the franchise. Taking to Twitter, @Todd4UI said: “Talk about milking a franchise.”

@SirWestmoore agreed: “Companies be milking the hell out of stuff I see.”
@nothingbruv said: “The main series has already been milked. What's the point of a spin off now.”
@choc0ne0one added: “When it runs its course just let it be.”
@Kid_Kinobi simply asked: “Why?”
The animated series is the latest spin-off from the hit series to be announced, following news that a stage show set in the Stranger Things universe is coming to London’s West End. Stranger Things: The First Shadow will serve as a prequel to the main series, and centre on a young Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado as they deal with “the shadows of the past”.
An untitled live-action spin-off series is also in the works. Stranger Things was renewed for a fifth and final season last year, with The Duffer Brothers teasing fans that there are still more stories to tell.
“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes,” they said. “But first we hope you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down.”
A release date for season five of Stranger Things has yet to be confirmed.
