'Strange' - Nottingham Forest duo booed in Huddersfield by bitter fans while on England duty

Nottingham Forest promotion heroes Djed Spence and James Garner were booed when they played for England Under-21s at the home of Huddersfield Town on Monday.

The duo were key members of the Forest team that defeated Huddersfield in the play-off final at Wembley last month, as they saw out their spells on loan from Middlesbrough and Manchester United respectively. With the Young Lions in action at the John Smiths' Stadium, it seems local supporters are still bitter about that day at Wembley.

Both Spence and Garner were booed by the crowd when their names were read out over the PA system before the match. The duo were also spotted dancing along before the game when 'Freed From Desire' - Forest's promotion anthem - was played through the stadium speakers.

When asked after the match about the booing of Spence in particular, England Under-21s boss Lee Carsley said the "strange" reaction was not beneficial to his players as they look to make the most of their home crowds.

He told reporters post-match: "It was strange, to be fair. It was disappointing because he's playing for England and he's not playing for anyone else.

"It's important that when we do have crowds, that they are fully behind us. We have enough of booing when we are away from home. It is something that the players, if they are going to play at the highest level, are going to have to get used to."
