Strange fish bowl-like helmet goes on sale as face mask alternative

People struggling with face masks can now opt for a new astronaut-like helmet to try and keep Covid-19 at bay.

MicroClimate’s air helmet costs £150 and looks like a futuristic fish bowl, which can be worn instead of surgical face masks.

The product is marketed by snaps of businessmen in suits and air helmets, with adverts boasting that you can see people’s facial expressions through the protective bubble – unlike with face masks.

But the helmet – which includes a ventilation system and filters – split opinion on social media, and some people couldn’t get their head around the concept.

James Kelleher tweeted: “The real beauty of the microclimate air helmet is that it allows businessmen to fart freely with zero repercussions.”

Victoria DeSantis was similarly unconvinced, and took to Facebook to ask: “What if you have to sneeze…you just spray snot in your bubble and gross people out?”

Others were sceptical of the product because they think it’s trying to sell air.

Luis Villeges said: “Oh s**t, that’s selling air? I thought it was a funky space helmet.”

But the air helmet, which comes with more than four hour’s battery life, is not without its admirers.

Garry Garner quipped: “Matt Damon wore one in that documentary about Mars.”

Alex Zheltkov added: “It’s almost like the SpaceX helmets.”

And Brad said: “Now everyone can be Daft Punk.”

MicroClimate’s website says: “Michael Hall envisioned a new wearable while skiing with his family in the mountains of Utah. As he spoke with his children on the lift, he could not see their faces.

“They were obstructed by ski masks, goggles and outer clothing. This equipment quickly gets wet, cold and gross.

“He envisioned a new kind of wearable that would create a "Micro climate" around the head."
