Strabane comedian Emer Maguire ‘in her element’ as she returns for hometown gig

Strabane comedian Emer Maguire returns to her hometown later this month following a whirlwind few years which has seen her explode onto the comedy scene.

Emer’s musical comedy with a twist of science has seen her propelled into high profile venues recently, with a recent gig at the Ulster Hall proving to be a high point.

She brings her In Her Element Back Home show to the Alley Theatre on February 26, and said she is hoping for a warm welcome from those from the Co Tyrone town.

“It’s actually going to be my first ever show in Strabane, it’s a stand up musical comedy show,” Emer told MyTyrone.

“I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve never done any comedy show down home or even in the direction of down home.

“Everything I’ve done has either been in Belfast or even further afield in England or Scotland.

“There is a very unique sense of humour in Strabane, so I’m hoping everyone is going to be on the same page as me in terms of the comedy they enjoy.

“I’m really excited and obviously it’s lovely to do it back home as my family will be there and I’m hoping it will be a really warm audience.”

Emer, 30, has appeared on four TedX talks, as well as presenting radio shows on the BBC on her expert subject of science, and said she fell into comedy as opposed to marking it as a career path.

Emer found fame on TikTok recently with her hilarious song ‘How am I 30?’, which has racked up more than 280,000 views on the platform

She added: “I had a bit of a weird move into comedy, I was a speech and language therapist but I also did science communication on the side.

“It was basically talking to the general public about science, and from that I started to appear on radio from that.

“I’ve always been a musician as well so I started to write funny science songs for a bit of craic.

“Once I started doing that people started referring to me as a comedian, which was totally unintentional.

“I started doing a couple of comedy gigs then before the pandemic hit, so I feel like my career is still in its infancy, but it’s been going really well and I’m really happy with it.”
