Strabane Class A drugs find leads to two arrests after police notice 'suspicious activity' at checkpoint

Two men were arrested in Strabane on Sunday after police seized £30,000 worth of suspected class A drugs in the town.

The PSNI said local officers were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the Lifford Road when a vehicle stopped and turned to go the opposite direction.

The car was then searched by police, with officers seizing the suspected drugs and other items before conducting further follow up searches at two addresses.

The follow up searches saw more drugs and drugs paraphernalia being seized by police, with the two men, aged 26 and 42 arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

"Police in Strabane have arrested two men and seized suspected Class A controlled drugs with an estimated street value of approximately £30,000," a PSNI spokesperson said.

Sergeant Karen McGuinness said: "Derg Neighbourhood officers were conducting a vehicle check point in the Lifford Road area shortly before 11.55pm on Sunday, September 18 when they noted a vehicle turning and driving in the opposite direction.

"The car was subsequently stopped and searched, with officers seizing a quantity of suspected drugs and other items. Both the driver and passenger were arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A controlled drugs with intent to supply.

"Follow up searches at two addresses saw officers seize more suspected drugs and other items including drugs paraphernalia and mobile phones.

"The two men, aged 26 and 42, both remain in custody at this time.

"This seizure came about as a result of local police officers detecting and responding to suspicious activity. This is another example, as part of Op Dealbreaker, of our determination to remove such substances from our streets and to arrest and prosecute those who make their living by dealing drugs.

"The devastating impact of the drugs trade on communities, families and children is well documented. Together we can stop it and I would appeal for anyone with any information about drug dealing in your local area to please pass this information to police.”
