A popular Cardiff nightclub will be reopening with a new name after being taken over by the team behind Przym and Heidi's Bier Bar. Story nightclub in the capital's bustling Greyfriars Road has been a popular destination for the city's clubbers since rebranding from Glam in 2019 but is now set to undergo another major refurbishment.
It has been acquired by Scandinavian nightclub and bar operator Rekom, who are behind brands like Pryzm and Steinbeck & Shaw, both of which are also on the city centre street. Get the latest What's On news from Cardiff and beyond sent straight to your inbox for free by signing up to our newsletter.
The takeover comes just weeks after Rekom announced it was opening a new 'party pub' in the capital with Proud Mary Pub, which has branches in Denmark, Finland and Norway, set to open its first UK venue at the former site of Yard Bar & Kitchen. The nightlife group also opened Heidi's Bier Bar in Mill Lane earlier this year with Story becoming its fifth venue in Cardiff.

The nightclub underwent a £750,000 refurbishment in 2019 as it transitioned from Glam to Story promising "Instagrammable backdrops" and a rooftop terrace complete with an island shack. The huge venue also has five bars, two club rooms, and a VIP area.
It has been confirmed that the 1,400-capacity club will now reopen as District later this month and in time for this year's Freshers' week with thousands of students set to pass through its doors. Rekom has said the venue will "complement its neighbouring superclub" Pryzm, by offering "alternative event-led music entertainment".
Rekom’s country executive director, Russell Quelch, said: “Cardiff is a vibrant city with a thriving late-night economy and is a key part of Rekom’s expansion strategy across the UK. District means we can build on our cluster of businesses in the Welsh capital which now range from our après ski-themed Heidi’s Bier Bar to two nightclubs, party bar Steinbeck & Shaw, and modern pub, Proud Mary offering something for everyone. We believe Cardiff can accommodate two clubs of Pryzm and District’s size giving us the scope to put on a wider range of events and cater for more of the late-night market in the city.”
Mr Quelch added that a "safety net system" would be imposed at the club with all possible steps taken to look after guests. This system includes qualified first-aiders and a medical room as well as a taxi escort service and free phone charging stations.
Outside of Cardiff the group has other Welsh venues including ATIK in Wrexham and Fiction in Swansea. It is set to continue its rapid expansion in Wales with another Proud Mary Pub scheduled to open in Swansea in early 2023 following the launch of the Cardiff venue this autumn.
