Storm Oscar: Met Office warning for thunder in Bristol issued for weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning in parts of the South West - including Bristol - as Storm Oscar approaches the UK this weekend. The warning for thunderstorms, which covers Bristol and Gloucestershire as well as parts of Somerset, Wiltshire, Wales, North West England, South East England and London, is in place from 2pm to 9pm on Saturday (June 10).

Forecasters say that "heavy rain and hail" could hit areas during this time. It comes as the region continues to enjoy warm and dry weather, with a heat health warning in place this weekend.

The Met Office says : "Whilst many places will be largely dry, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in some places on Saturday afternoon."

They add that some properties may flood while driving conditions could be difficult. The Met Office has outlined what to expect during the weather warning:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and possibly even cancellations to rail services.
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be temporarily lost.

Storm Oscar, which was named by the Spanish meteorological service, is currently making its way towards the UK, bringing a front of low pressure. The weather system has been causing stormy conditions in areas such as the Canary Islands with heavy rainfall battering the popular tourist destination.

Friday: Cloud gradually increasing through the day with a few showers possible in the afternoon. Staying rather windy too, particularly first thing. Still feeling warm, especially in sheltered spots. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Feeling very warm with temperatures climbing and winds easing. Lots of dry weather around although with the chance of heavy showers, perhaps thundery. Turning rather humid, perhaps feeling uncomfortable overnight.
