Storm Malik Edinburgh: Hour-by-hour weather forecast as Met Office issues amber warning

Edinburgh locals have woken up to strong gusts of wind as an amber weather warning has been issued.

An amber weather warning means that there could be a risk to life due to debris falling.

Travel plans have been thrown in chaos as trains have been cancelled around Scotland and the North of England.

The heavy winds are set to continue throughout today, Saturday January 29 and ease in the evening.

However, the Met Office warns another storm is heading our way and wind and heavy rain is expected on Sunday evening for another unsettled night.

The Met Office forecast: "Storm Malik will bring very strong west or northwesterly winds. Severe gales in the morning, reaching storm force across exposed routes in the east, then easing during afternoon. Cloudy with rain at first followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. Maximum temperature 9 °C."

Whether you're battening down the hatches to ride it through or plan on venturing out, here's what to expect hour by hour on Saturday.

Morning

From 9am, Edinburgh experienced staggering gusts reaching up to 62 miles per hour.

There is a 50 percent chance of rain from 10am and winds will continue to be high at 55mph and then 53 at 11am.

If you're looking for that silver lining while you're chasing your wheelie bin down the street, any drizzle is forecasted to clear and skies are expected to be sunny by the afternoon.

Afternoon

From 12pm, the gusts are expected to die down to 45mph. While that is still high, it marks the downwards slope of the storm for now.

From 1pm, the speeds continue to settle to 40, then 41 by 2pm.

From 3pm, the amber weather warning is set to be lifted as the wind becomes a lot more manageable at 39 mph and then 38 at 4pm.

Evening

If you are planning on heading out, might be worth waiting till the evening as from 5pm it will continue to be dry with winds just at 32.

From 6pm, we head into the 20 miles per hour band, which will feel a lot more settled as each hour it will continue to decline right down from 26 to 20 by 11pm.

Sunday

Sunday morning and afternoon is forecasted to be settled with cloud but the Met Office don't forecast any rain fall until the evening.

However by 3pm, drizzle will hit Edinburgh, getting heavier by 4pm.

A yellow weather warning will return to the city for 6pm and a second band of strong wind is set to batter Edinburgh.

Wind gusts will start at 40 mph and reach 48 by 9pm before slowing down into the night.
