Many regions are still expected to see snow today after being blanketed this week following the coldest night of the year.
Last night's night temperatures were similar to Wednesday, which was the coldest night of the year before even colder conditions move in on Friday night.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said that areas of the Highlands could see minus 17C, after this year's record low of minus 16C was recorded at Altnaharra in the region.
It comes as Storm Larisa, which was named by the French weather service, is going to batter the UK today.
Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said: "Storm Larisa, which Meteo France has named, is the same low-pressure system that is bringing us the bands of rain.

"But essentially, we're on the northern side of the low-pressure system and it's the southern side of that low-pressure system that is going to be bringing particularly strong winds to parts of France.
"So that did originate out in the Atlantic and then it tracked its way eastward towards us, and the weather fronts that are swirling around that low-pressure system have then been pushing into the cold air that has been in places across the UK and allowing that rain to start falling as snow across several areas."
The weather is expected to clear by the end of Friday, before then being replaced by another low-pressure system, leading to further yellow snow and ice warning for much of northern England and Scotland from 3pm on Saturday to 6am on Sunday.

Scotland
Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said that a pocket of western Scotland covering Glasgow and the county of Argyll may be the only region untouched by heavy rain and snow over the next 24 hours.
However, the rest of the country is under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for today.
There will be scattered showers affecting northern Scotland today and tonight.

The Met Office says it will be possible to see the odd snow flurry today.
Temperatures will reach about 6C before dropping to lows of -3C overnight.

Similar to North West England, snow flurries are possible.
For the most part, temperatures will be warmer than the past few days, but snow will still remain.

East Midlands
Today sleet or snow will clear this morning, but wintry showers are still to come.
The maximum temperature today is 5C before dropping overnight to -6C, increasing the risk of ice on untreated surfaces.

West Midlands
Similar to the East Midlands, snow and sleet will begin to clear before temperatures drop this evening.
The region will see lows of -3C with widespread frost.

East of England
Rain, snow and sleet will also clear in this region by early afternoon. Temperatures will reach 5C and overnight will drop to -5C.

London and South East
Wintry conditions will clear up today as temperatures will reach 8C and overnight could drop to -6C.
Snow can be mainly for northern areas and especially high ground.

Similar to London and South West England, wintry conditions will start to clear up today.
Some wintry flurries are possible with winds rising and making it feel much colder.
Temperatures will reach 7C before dropping to 0C overnight.
Northern Ireland
There is a yellow weather warning for ice in force for today.
Temperatures will reach 5C before slipping to -5C overnight.
Today will be bright for most with a few showers.
Wales
Snow, rain and sleet will start to clear today, making it brighter and lighter for sone.
However, the odd snow flurry is still possible. The maximum temperature today is 6C and the minimum is -2C.
