Storm Juliette brings snow and weather warnings to Spain and Majorca

Holidaymakers heading for Spain or the Balearic Islands may be in for quite the surprise after a freezing storm blanketed parts of the region in snow. Forecasters have warned that up to 16 inches of snow could fall over the next 24 hours.

Officials issued a red weather warning as temperatures were reported to have dropped to minus two degrees. As a precaution, local residents and holidaymakers are being advised to stay indoors until the storm clears.

Across Majorca, roads were closed and power cuts were reported. Meanwhile, photos from Barcelona snow the Catalan capital plunged below freezing.

Usually, temperatures in Barcelona for this time of year are between 8C and 15C. But instead, residents were forced to swap lightweight jackets for thick coats and woolly hats, instead.

Storm Juliette is expected to bring heavy rain storms with huge waves and intense winds over the next few days. Spain’s meteorological service, AEMET, issued a red warning for today (February 28) and has further issued amber warnings for wind and rain.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, however, holidaymakers flying from the UK have not seen much disruption at airports. Flights leaving from Manchester and London today were mostly on time, with a couple of delays of less than 10 minutes.

Similar to the UK, Spain is part of a group of nations that names its storms. Juliette will be the 10th storm to hit the Southwestern group since the beginning of the season in September. The next storm will be named Storm Kamiel.
