Storm Franklin stops all bin collections in Wirral

Bins will not be emptied in Wirral today, as Storm Franklin hits Merseyside with high winds.

Severe weather in our region has brought chaos to transport networks, with rail services cancelled and major roads closed.

Many train operators, including Northern Rail and Merseyrail, have urged passengers not to travel as lines are blocked by fallen trees and flooding caused by Storm Franklin.

In Wirral, Biffa, the council’s contractor, has put off all of its bin collections in the borough until tomorrow, something which will cause delays throughout the rest of the week.

An update put out by the council today said: “Biffa has continued to assess the weather conditions this morning and has made the decision to postpone all Monday collections until tomorrow.

“Please take your bin back in and put it back out for collection by 7am on Tuesday. This means there will be a knock on to all collections this week as crews catch up.”

This week’s collections timetable:

  • Collections due on Monday, February 21, will now be collected on Tuesday, February 22
  • Collections due on Tuesday, February 22, will now be collected on Wednesday, February 23
  • Collections due on Wednesday, February 23, will now be collected on Thursday, February 24
  • Collections due on Thursday, February 24, will now be collected on Friday, February 25
  • Collections due on Friday, February 25, will now be collected on Saturday, February 26

If after your revised collection day your bin has still not been collected but the rest of the bins in your street have, the council advises reporting it online.

Wirral Council’s street cleansing service will also not be running today, but will resume as normal tomorrow.

Guinea Gap leisure pool, in Seacombe, is closed due to roof damage and will remain closed until further notice.

All lessons are currently being transferred to the training pool and the rest of the leisure centre remains open.

With strong winds forecast there is likely to be a high number of trees damaged.

Residents are urged to steer clear of woodlands and wooded areas in parks.
