Storm Evelyn: Met Eireann forecasts snow for Ireland as heavy wintry showers to bring baltic blast

Met Éireann have warned people to wrap up warm on Friday night as heavy wintry showers are set to fall across the country, blanketing the island in snow and hail.

Their morning prediction on Friday told us that snow was possible, but the national forecaster have now gone one further by warning the public of "heavy" showers.

Even though the worst of the actual snow will be in the north and east, the rest of the country won't escape the brutal weather.

Met Éireann tweeted on Friday: "Some heavy wintry showers out there this afternoon, mostly in Ulster & Leinster with a chance of isolated thunderstorms, hail, sleet & even snow at times

"It will get notably colder in the blustery showers so wrap up well"

Things aren't really set to improve any time soon, as an unsettled period is being predicted with heavy rain in store for many.

That's because Storm Evelyn will sweep across the western half of Europe by Sunday.

Saturday looks to be the best of the weekend, with "long sunny spells during the morning but cloud will build in places during the afternoon with a few light showers developing" according to the forecast, which again warns of temperatures only reaching 7C in parts.

Sunday will be "mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. More persistent rain will move in across southwestern counties at times. Top temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees."
