Storm Eunice: Top tips from the DSPCA to keep your pets safe during storm

As preparations are made for the arrival of Storm Eunice on Friday, the DSPCA is urging Dubliners to make sure their pets are safe during the storm.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Gillian Bird from the DSPCA said that cats and dogs can become "very frightened" of stormy conditions.

She said: "All pets can be very frightened of the bad weather, so the best thing is to keep them inside where it's safe."

The DSPCA have issued the following advice ahead of the arrival of Storm Eunice

  • Ensure pets are kept indoors during high winds and that when brought out to go “toilet” they are kept on a lead or ensure that side gates/gardens are secure
  • Keep cats indoors and provide them with a litter tray
  • Check your pets microchip details are up to date with your local vet
  • Bring rabbit hutches indoors or into a shed or if this is not possible make sure the enclosures are secure and not liable to blow over in high winds and can stay dry in driving winds
  • Lock and secure aviary’s or pigeon houses to keep birds safe
  • Bring horses and ponies and other equines into closer fields or into stables and ensure that the hedges and fences are not damaged allowing animals to escape after the storm has passed
  • Avoid bringing dogs on walks outside during the height of the bad winds and rain

Gillian added: "If you come across a stray or injured animal during the storm please keep it safe until arrangements can be made to locate owner or arrange for safe transportation to a vet."
