Storm Dudley causes damage across Bristol as helicopters on stand-by for Storm Eunice

Helicopters are on stand-by as Storm Eunice is set to hit the region tomorrow (Friday, February 18).

This comes as the area is still recovering from the damage caused by Storm Dudley earlier this week. An area in the city centre remains cordoned off this morning due to damage caused last night.

And pictures being shared on social media also show that a tree has fallen along one of the city's river path, while a large tree also fell on St George's Park last night. If you are aware of any other storm damage, please let us know via email - bristolpostnews@localworld.co.uk

Western Power Distribution said this week will see a period of "unsettling weather", but that they are prepared. WPD said: "The next few days are looking to bring a period of unsettling weather with two named storms bringing heavy winds and rain across the UK.

"Storm Dudley is expected to bring strong winds to the north of the country through to Thursday morning. Storm Eunice is expected to follow soon after, bringing strong winds and showers across many parts of our region throughout Friday into Saturday morning, bringing potential disruption to our network.

"We know that storm conditions can be a worrying time for our customers, so we have put a range of measures in place to ensure we’re ready for any impact on the electricity network."

It continued: "Preparations will be in place so that, whatever the weather, we can work to restore power supplies quickly and safely for you if they are disrupted. In particular, we have:

How has the weather affected you? Tell us in the comments section.

  • Additional operational and engineering staff ready and on stand-by to respond to any network issues.
  • Additional Contact and control Centre operatives available to manage the electricity network and to help customers with their enquiries.
  • Preparations to operate 24/7 in support of operational field staff (e.g. IT, communications).
  • Helicopters available to fly and identify badly affected areas to hasten repairs if safe to do so from first light.
  • Planned work will be cancelled where resource is required to support customers if the weather affects supplies. You will be notified if your works is to be rescheduled."
  • Two fire engines and two police cars were pictured outside the Radisson Blu in Broad Quay at around 8.50pm last night, with a cordon in place blocking off a significant chunk of space on the street outside of the hotel.

A police officer at the scene advised that glass had fallen from the hotel but nobody was injured. Another officer said that a stretch of Broad Quay is now being closed until the morning due to concerns that any more unstable material could blow off.
