Storm damage sustained by landmark North Lanarkshire clock

The distinctive town clock at North Lanarkshire’s headquarters is undergoing repairs after being damaged in a storm last month.

It has been removed from its prominent square tower at the Civic Centre in Motherwell to allow specialist work to be carried out on one of its faces and sets of hands.

Several weeks of work on the four-sided square timepiece have been carried out by public and steeple clock repair specialists HE Weir & Son, and it is now scheduled to be reinstalled next week.

A council spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live: “Heavy storms caused the hinge on one face of the clock to open causing damage to the face/dial.

“Straightening of the clock hands, sign writing and painting of the hands required to be carried out.

“Currently the clock is on a test in the workshop and once satisfied the contractor will reinstate. Approximate costs for these works are £5000.”

Located near the junction of Windmillhill Street and Airbles Road in Motherwell, the clock and tower are included within the B-listed building status of the wider Civic Centre complex.

The entire 1960s structure – consisting of the six-storey main building with projecting circular council chamber, adjoining offices plus the concert hall and theatre building – is considered to be of “special architectural or historic interest” as a major and relatively rare unaltered example of the country’s post-war Modernist civic architecture.

It was given listed building status by Historic Environment Scotland in December 2020, who noted that it is “one of a very small number of major civic commissions of architectural distinction in Scotland which survive largely intact”.
