UK storm – latest: Schools closed, flights grounded and major incidents declared as Storm Ciarán hits

PA Wire

Waves batter Devon coast as Storm Ciaran hits UK

Hundreds of schools have closed as a tornado weather warning has been issued ahead of Storm Ciarán battering the British Isles and Channel islands.

The warning, issued by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO), said the highest risk of a tornado would be across South Wales to London.

Meanwhile, flights have been grounded, train services disrupted and major incidents declared in parts of the UK as the storm makes landfall with gusts of over 100mph in places.

One resident in Jersey was seen “in tears” after arriving at an emergency shelter claiming the roof of her home had been ripped off, according to reports.

Southeastern railway warned commuters not to travel before 9am, saying that severe disruption was highly likely throughout Thursday.

“Even after this time, severe disruption is highly likely throughout Thursday so we would recommend that you work from home if you can or postpone your journey until Friday,” it said.
