Stop and search powers in place in South Manchester after firearms discharge and arson attacks

A stop and search order has been put in force for two areas in the South of Manchester and Stockport following reports of a firearms discharge and a series of arson attacks.

The order, under Section 60, means that police officers have temporary additional powers to stop and search people in a defined area within a specific timeframe.

It will remain in place from this evening (Wednesday 3 May 2023) until 8:15pm tomorrow (Thursday 4 May 2023), Greater Manchester Police have said.

These powers have been implemented temporarily in response to recent incidents. Police are treating these as linked and targeted attacks and there is believed to be no threat to the wider community.

The incidents are related to a firearms discharge that occurred in Burnage on April 30 2023, and a series of arson attacks on May 2.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "GMP understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to residents, however, the use of these powers is only authorised when it is proportionate and necessary.

"Officers out and about will continue to do all they can to keep you safe and will be on hand to offer any reassurance. Extra uniformed and non-uniformed officers have been deployed to the areas to support the investigation team and the community."
