FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School evacuated one of its buildings and placed the rest of the campus under a lockdown Friday after an envelope containing a “suspicious substance” was received in the front office, officials say.
The school remained under a modified hold as of Friday afternoon, meaning students could leave in a “modified way,” said John Sullivan, a spokesperson for the school district, while they wait for law enforcement to clear the building.
Sullivan said the envelope contained a “suspicious white substance” that was later determined not to be harmful. It was likely mailed to the school since it was received in the front office, Sullivan said.
About 11:45 a.m., Broward deputies responded to the scene and evacuated the room where the envelope was located, said Gerdy St. Louis, a spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The school district said on Twitter that the substance “was determined to not be harmful” but that Building 100 had been evacuated “out of an abundance of caution.”
Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes and Threat Management Unit detectives remain on the scene “actively investigating” the incident, St. Louis said.
