Stockport County pay tribute to former record-signing Neil Matthews following death at 56

Stockport County have paid tribute to former record-signing Neil Matthews following his death with cancer aged 56. Matthews played a key role in County's legendary 1990-91 season, scoring two goals in the club's final day 5-0 win over Scunthorpe that secured the club's first promotion in 20 years.

In a statement, the club said Matthews played a significant part in one of County's 'most important seasons' and helped 'pave the way for greatest period in the club's history'. Injuries eventually restricted his playing time at Edgeley Park and he left the club in December 1992, having played 47 games and scoring 15 goals.

Matthews began his career with his hometown club Grimsby Town, making his league debut in 1984. He had loan spells at Scunthorpe and Bolton before signing for Halifax in 1987.

A stunning 25 yard strike in the memorable final game of the 1989-90 season at the Shay convinced Stockport boss Danny Bergara to stump up a club record £70,000 fee. After leaving Edgeley Park, Matthews had spells at Bury and in the non-leagues.

He finished his playing career having scored 68 goals in 258 games. After hanging up his boots he coached in the academies of Huddersfield Town and Bradford City.

In a statement, Stockport County said: "Neil is fondly remembered at Edgeley Park, for playing a significant part in one of the most important seasons in the club history. He was a part of the Bergara revolution, that galvanised a generation of County supporters.

"The 1990-91 season gave hope to County fans, who never believed they would ever see the Hatters leave the Fourth Division through promotion. He and his colleagues lit the touch paper that led to the greatest period in the club’s history and for that he will always be remembered with great affection.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Sue and all of his friends and family, at this very difficult time."
