Stock Market Today: Dow Jones Falls On Trump Tariff Risk; Nvidia Drops As Warren Buffett Stock Eyes Buy Point (Live Coverage)

Indexes broke a three-day winning streak Wednesday just as President Donald Trump was set to announce tariffs on the auto industry. Stocks were also pressured by the prospect of more export controls as reciprocal duties are set to hit next week. Among those that felt the pain was artificial intelligence leader Nvidia, along with Tesla on the stock market today.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, but it fared best among the major indexes on Wednesday. The S&P finished 1.1% lower while the Nasdaq plunged 2%, or more than 370 points.

The tech-dominated Nasdaq remains well below its 200-day moving average while the S&P slipped back under that line Wednesday.

Volume on the New York Stock Exchange was lower and on the Nasdaq higher compared with the same time Tuesday. Breadth deteriorated, with decliners outnumbering advancers by roughly 7-to-3 on the Nasdaq and 9-to-5 on the NYSE.

Small caps on the Russell 2000 index fell further, down 1.1%, while the Innovator IBD 50 exchange traded fund underperformed, declining 2.1%. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose four basis points to 4.35%.

How The Sectors Fared; Nvidia Weighs On Dow

Among the S&P 500 sectors, consumer staples, utilities and energy gained while consumer discretionary and technology lagged.

Nvidia fell and weighed the most on the Dow Jones index amid fears of new checks on chip exports to China. Other tech leaders underperformed. Nvidia recently retook the 21-day moving average but fell below it again on Wednesday.
