Stirling reuse hub is backing 'don't buy new' plea

People across Stirling are being urged to ‘buy nothing new for June’ as part of a campaign to reduce our carbon footprint.

The effort is being organised by environmental charity Transition Scotland and and sees the group linking up with various reuse organisations based in the region to challenge residents to reduce their impacts on the planet.

Among the other organisations taking part in the challenge are Forth Environment Link, Coorie Creative and Recyke-a-Bike - with hopes to bring others on board ahead of the challenge getting underway.

The campaign will see Transition hosting a range of events, including helping locals fix items through ‘repair cafes’ and sharpening workshops; creating new items from old via specialist workshops; and buying preloved items from Stirling’s reuse and charity shops.

The events being held will be shared via Transition’s Facebook page and will include opportunities for June such as making your own Jubilee bunting and bike repair sessions.

Residents are now able to sign up for the month-long event - with a book fair being hosted last weekend to kick off the activities.

Kate Hamilton, Stirling Reuse Hub manager, said: “We are delighted to launch our new campaign with our partners.

“We hope that the campaign will raise awareness of the high-quality items that can be found in reuse and charity shops across Stirling.

“Our workshops and events cater for everyone, and we hope to see many residents learning new skills and having fun. We believe that we can all shape our future, and this campaign enables people to take a small, but positive step to tackle the climate emergency.”
