Stirling communities hit by flooding chaos - with main roads and rural routes cut off

Torrential rain and flooding caused chaos in communities across Stirling last week.

On Friday, the downpours forced the M9 at Bannockburn to be closed to traffic because of rising water.

Parts of west Stirlingshire saw communities battling to keep water ingress from some properties and vehicles.

The Loch Lomond Fisheries Trust (LLFT) said that, after six hours of heavy rainfall, the lower Blane and Endrick had both burst their banks.

In one LLFT picture, the road near the bridge over the Blane, near to Killearn, was seen to be submerged, with a hearse unable to get through the water and forced to turn back.

LLFT representatives then headed to the angler’s car park at Barns Ford, where the normally large field had become a pond.

In a social media post, LLFT said: “Upstream of the bridge the island was completely covered and the foot bridge itself was very close to being submerged. Walkers in the area were lucky that this spate did not bring down a big tree otherwise the bridge might be in the loch by now.”

The Trust worked on the Endrick downstream of its junction with the Blane – part of their NRF ‘Beyond the Endrick Project’ and in December new fences were erected and trees planted.

In Drymen, the show field there was under water with sheep avoiding flooded fields by fleeing for higher ground. A property and a number of cars had been engulfed by the water. The LLFT added: “Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, we headed to Drymen show fields and found it a bit damp.

“Fortunately four sheep had found a section of high ground, unfortunately a house and at least four BMWs didn’t.”

In Killin, the village was feeling the effects of snowfall in the area. Community councillor Ron Allner said: “Our problem was snow this morning (Friday). The glen was blocked by a jackknifed lorry I heard and the Crianlarich road was closed also. Dalmally was bad also. Glen Ogle had a lot of surface water later. My son started his journey back to Dorset four hours late and became static on the M74 due to flooding.”

Stirling Council advised drivers on Friday that, due to the flooding, the B823, Cornton Road was closed, as well as the A907/A91 Manor Powis westbound.

There was also reports of flooding on the B924 Hill of Row, A84 Callander to Doune, A81 Glengoyne Distillery in Killearn, A811 Gartocharn to Drymen, B829 Aberfoyle to Kinlochard, A905 at Polmaise waste facility, A905 Kerse Road at Springkerse.

The M9 near Stirling also saw large pools of standing water during Friday and had to be closed shortly before 10am and re-opened shortly before 5pm.

The Met Office had issued a further yellow weather warning for rain which was in place across much of rural Stirling until 6am this morning (Wednesday).

In what proved to be an unsettled and eventful last week of 2022 it all began last Tuesday when a blanket of snow covered Stirling in the first major snowfall of the season. By midweek the snow was melting – increasing river levels and the flood risk – which was then increased significantly further on Friday when nearly two inches of rain fell causing local flooding and travel issues.

The year ended on a wintry note with a few flurries of snow around midnight on Hogmanay.

The maximum daily rainfall was 43.69mm on Friday, for a weekly total of 89.16mm.

The first week of 2023 will start cold and dry with temperatures below freezing. As the week progresses it will turn more unsettled with more wet weather returning on Tuesday and into the first half of Wednesday.

Some more wet weather is expected on Thursday and then later on Friday and over the weekend. In the main the wet weather will mostly fall as rain but temperatures at times will be low enough for it to turn to snow on higher ground and sleet at lower levels.
