Stirling Albion's sixth signing of the summer set for weekend tournament

Stirling Albion boss Darren Young has made striker Danny Burns his sixth signing of the summer.

The prolific striker joins the Binos after a free-scoring campaign for West of Scotland League side Shotts Bon Accord.

Burns netted more than 130 goals in his time at Hannah Park– including 37 last season as Shotts finished runner-ups to unbeaten Conference A champs Arthurlie.

He will offer another attacking option alongside former Stenhousemuir striker Robert Thomson and last season’s top scorer Dale Carrick.

Thomson was on target in Tuesday’s friendly with Alloa at the Indodrill Stadium as Albion crashed 4-1 to Brian Rice’s League 1 side.

The big striker ’s header sneaked under the keeper just before the break but the visitors were already 3-0 down.

Former Dundee United winger Adam King grabbed a double in 22 and 27 minutes and ex-Livingston and St Johnstone midfielder Stefan Scougall fired home the third goal in 35 minutes. King completed his hat-trick with a low angled drive early in the second half.

The Binos are back in action this weekend when they take part in the North Lanarkshire Cup at Broadwood. First up is a game against Airdrieonians on Saturday, kick-off 4pm. That match follows the meeting of hosts Cumbernauld Colts and Albion Rovers at 1.30pm. The two winners will meet on Sunday at 4pm, with the two losing teams going head to head at 1.30pm. Admission each day is £8 for adults and £4 for concessions.

Meanwhile, Stirling Albion will discover their SPFL Trust Trophy opponents when the draw for the first and second rounds of the competition is made on Monday at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium.

The Binos will enter in round two in the midweek of August 23/24 and could face a club from Wales or Northern Ireland if they make it to the third round on September 24/25. Northern Irish champions Linfield and runners-up Cliftonville, along with Welsh champs The New Saints and play-off winners Caernarfon Town are in as cross-border clubs return for the first time since 2019/20.

Defender Will Greenhorn – who spent time on loan at Sauchie Juniors last season – this week signed a new deal at Forthbank and is expected to be part of the first-team squad in 2022/23.
