'Still positive', Matty Bondswell will benefit from Shrewsbury loan spell says Newcastle coach

Newcastle United coach Elliott Dickman has told Matty Bondswell to use his difficult Shrewsbury Town experience to his advantage - despite not getting a single minute of action with the League One side.

The former RB Leipzig defender is back on Tyneside after Newcastle cut his Shropshire loan deal short and recalled him to star for the Under-23s. Bondswell played his part in Monday's 4-3 win over West Bromwich Albion.

And despite the obvious disappointment for Bondswell after being overlooked by Steve Cotterill at Shrewsbury, he now has the chance to contribute to the second string's play-off push in Premier League 2.

Dickman said: "Loan experiences are positive regardless and Matty has been out training with men and in that environment which is obviously slightly different to how we're set up with the Under-23s so there are positives within that, the only thing that didn't happen was he was struggling with game time and couldn't get into the team.

"From our point of view, we just want to make sure he's getting some game time. "It's fantastic, he played at Stoke last week and he played again tonight so it's important he's getting some minutes into his legs again."

Dickman also reflected on Jack Young's loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers with the midfielder still only sitting on two appearances with the third tier side. Dickman said: "He's played a little bit more than Matty has, he's come off the bench once or twice so the circumstances are slightly different.

"We felt as a club it was right for Matty to come back and get some game time but with Jack it's slightly different but that's not to say that it wouldn't change."
