Still no update on Quentin Lake’s knee: ‘It was a unique situation and circumstance’

Quentin Lake was a rookie a lot of Rams fans were excited about this year, but he’s been sidelined since the start of training camp with a knee injury. He remains on the PUP list and has yet to practice or play a preseason game, and it seems unlikely he’ll get on the field before the season begins.

When asked for an update on Lake’s status Sunday, Sean McVay didn’t have anything new to share on the rookie. He said it was a “unique situation and circumstance” and the team is taking it day by day with Lake.

“Not really an update. We’re just kind of taking it a day at a time with him. It was a unique situation and circumstance, so right now, no updates on him,” McVay said.

While Lake has been sidelined, fellow rookie Russ Yeast has stepped up and played well in the preseason. He hasn’t yet locked up a spot on the 53-man roster, but one would have to figure he’s close to doing so.

McVay sees both Yeast and Lake as being contributors for the Rams and he’s pleased with the way Lake has attacked his rehab. He doesn’t believe it’ll come down to keeping one or the other, either.

“I don’t think it’ll have to get down to that,” McVay said. “Russ has done a good job. He’s really played really well. Played every play in the first half and played all of (special) teams yesterday and he’s only getting better. He’s got great range, really coachable, high-football character guy, so I really like him. And I feel very similar, if you see the demeanor and the way Quentin Lake has handled himself in the meetings and just the way he’s attacking getting himself ready to go with Reggie (Scott) and his group both these guys are people we anticipate being very helpful contributors for the Rams.”

Given the circumstances, one would figure Lake might start the season on the PUP list or IR. If the Rams want him to return this season, he’ll have to make the 53-man roster first before going on IR. Or they can place him on the reserve/PUP list now, which would cause him to miss the first four games.
