Stewartry Sirens make it 10 out of 10 in the league with win over Biggar

Ten out of ten for Sirens who wrapped up a remarkable league season with a win over Biggar that gave them a full house of victories.

After a brace of weather enforced call offs, the match finally got under way at a cold and grey Greenlaw on Sunday afternoon.

With the weather playing a major part in the game it was a day for the big ball carrying Sirens forwards.

In unfamiliar white shirts, the Sirens received the ball from kick off and immediately went on the attack.

But the opening try was some time coming.

A show and go from Claire Manson saw her cross the line out wide. The conversion by Sophie Mann was missed by inches.

It woke Biggar up and they threw themselves at the Sirens’ defensive line but found it hard to punch through.

The second try came from one of three players returning to the team after some time away. From a lineout and a well-worked driving maul Jade Stewart crashed over. Mann added the extras.

With the Sirens camped in the Biggar half, the third came from Hannah Jackson (Sloan), scoring one of her trademark tries running round defenders and dotting down to send the Sirens into the break 17-0 to the good.

Biggar took to the sheds to warm up at half time but the hardy Sirens stayed out on the pitch.

It seemed to thaw out cold hands and Biggar came out firing in the second half.

Within the first 10 minutes they managed more trips into the Sirens 22 than they had in the previous half resulting in a well-worked try.

The last touchdown was reserved for Sirens though. After a period of scrums and lineouts the ball was worked out to Sophie Mann who outpaced Biggar on the outside and ran in the under the posts, kicking the conversion herself to give the Sirens a well deserved 24-5 win.

With the league already in the bag, it was a very satisfying win for the Sirens who had set out to try and win all 10 games this season, an aim achieved superbly.

Now the team is looking forward to the cup run in a few weeks time which will be a good gauge of how they will stand when they move up to the Women’s Premier League.
