Stewartry RFC return to winning ways with thumping win over Cambuslang

Stewartry bounced back from defeats to Garnock and East Kilbride to complete the double over Cambuslang in emphatic style.

The Blacks kicked off into the wind and the referee was soon penalising both teams as play swung from end to end.

An early break from TJ McCarney brought the first try for the Stewartry after only eight minutes with Andrew Picken adding the points for 7-0.

Stewartry kept the pressure on with first Austin and then Porteous taking play into the Cambuslang 22 before Porteous gave Andrew Picken the chance of the second try which he then converted 14-0.

Cambuslang hit back from the restart but the chance was lost with the ball going dead. Armstrong took a quick penalty, the Stewartry backs putting pressure on the Cambuslang line.

Next to show was Scott Milligan who broke clear from the Stewartry 22 only to be caught just short of the Cambuslang try line.

Twenty nine minutes and TJ McCarney made a break from halfway, jinking his way through the Cambuslang defence for a brilliant individual try. Andy Picken again added the conversion.

Milligan’s next trip up the wing saw his shirt ripped over his head as he was stopped in the corner with the line at his mercy.

Thirty five minutes and Ashley Mathias won a five metre lineout ball to crash over the line for the bonus point fourth try.

Just before half time Cambuslang had a sustained period of pressure on the Stewartry line before scoring their consolation try with the conversion missed. Half time 26-5 to the Blacks.

Stewartry started the second half with a bang with Mathias scoring his second try for the Blacks to take the lead 31-5 and it was basically game over.

Michael Yates came on for McCarney and hooker McGuire was stopped just short of the try line with a further attempt disallowed,

Stewartry scored further tries from Fraser Forsyth, Fergus Darne, Scott Milligan and a great hat-trick from Archie

Nicholson with captain John Picken adding five conversions for a final 11 tries and a 71-5 victory for Stewartry.

The win keeps Stewartry in second place and a play-off place with three games to go.
