Stewartry RFC claim bonus point win over Ardrossan Accies in Tennent's West One

The race for the Tennent’s West One title hots up as Stewartry cut back on table topping Garnock’s points differential lead.

The Blacks notched up their tenth win of the season at rain soaked Greenlaw where a squad of players arrived early to clear the water off the pitch to get the game on.

The Blacks were favourites to win with Ardrossan sitting bottom and only one win so far.

A 48-5 win at Ardrossan earlier this season flattered Stewartry in what was a hard fought game.

The visitors again proved more than able to match the Blacks in the strong cross wind which proved hard to handle for the 80 minutes.

Seven minutes into the game, Scott Milligan celebrated his 100th appearance by outrunning the Ardrossan defence over the 80 metres from his own 22 to score a great opening try. 5-0 to the Blacks.

Three minutes later Ardrossan were awarded a penalty in the Stewartry 22 in front of the posts which they landed, 5-3.

Eighteen minutes and Stewartry second row David Maxwell was yellow carded for robust play on the touchline.

Ardrossan put on the pressure with the extra man but they knocked on and Stewartry were able to clear their lines.

Play was back and forward with advantages being given to both teams from the referee.

Stevie McCulloch was busy winning good ball in the lineouts and from one the ball was passed to Alex Moffat who made good with his break and kick ahead but he was dumped into touch.

Milligan went off on another mazy run down the wing before being stopped by a high tackle.

The penalty kick was missed, blown past by the wind right on half time. 5-3.

The early second half play was a bit scrappy with both sides making many mistakes before Mick McCulloch gathered up a loose ball and crashed over for a second try, 10-3.

Ardrossan made progress into the Stewartry half on the hour but a penalty was missed.

Four minutes later and captain for the day Angus Lindsay, who had led from the front, broke through the Ardrossan defence to score a third try but the conversion was missed, 15-3.

In the final fifteen minutes Robert Austin put pressure on the Ardrossan line with a number of long distance clearance kicks into their 22.

McMorran, McCulloch and Carson were all stopped short before Ross Sanderson scored his first try for Stewarty securing the bonus point to great applause from the frozen but dry railwayside supporters.

The injury time try was the final play for the second week in a row, 20-3.

Stewartry Squad. T McLean, M McCulloch, I McMorran, D Maxwell, R Porteous, S McCulloch, A LIndsay (c), A Picken, R Austin, S Milligan, T J McCartney, F Forsyth, M Wright, A Moffat, J McCulloch, H Carson, F Gibson.
