Stewartry dentist teaching youngsters about the importance of oral hygiene

A dentist is making it her mission to teach youngsters about the importance of oral hygiene.

Dr Maria Papavergos, who runs The Lifestyle Dentist, has been driving home the message as part of her Making Mouths Matter in Schools campaign, which is supported by toothpaste brand Zendium. Dr Papavergos, who lives at Barwhillanty Estate near Parton, said: “I’m a dentist with an interest in health and wellbeing.

“I’m trying to get children in schools to understand how to look after their mouths, how the mouth leads to the body and how they can start making healthy choices from a young age that benefit their mouths and their bodies in their futures. “Zendium are a Unilever brand and are supporting me by providing toothpaste and I’m going into some local schools where I can try to get that message across.

“So far it’s been really engaging, speaking to kids and getting them to think about ways to be healthy and make choices themselves - so that it comes from them rather than the parents.

“If they can start to make the choices young hopefully it can reduce their problems in the future. It’s a preventative strategy and the younger you start the better.”

Dr Papavergos recently visited Gelston Primary and is hoping to work with Unilever and Zendium to turn Making Mouths Matter in Schools into a national programme.
