Steven Pressley voices Rangers transfer concern as he predicts 'difficult times' amid Celtic title momentum

Steven Pressley insists Rangers must add at leats two attacking players before the transfer window closes as he admitted to concerns at the state of the Ibrox squad.

And he reckons the title momentum is swinging towards Celtic as Pressley claimed the Light Blues haven’t improved under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Pressley won titles at both halves of the Old Firm and reckons the bitter rivals could serve up a cracker in next week’s derby.

But the Glasgow giants have two huge Scottish Premiership fixtures before that as they prepare to battle it out in the second half of the season.

The 48-year-old, though, isn’t entirely convinced by the current champions despite their four point lead at the top with Ianis Hagi ruled out for the season and Alfredo Morelos on Colombia duty.

James Sands has been signed from New York City on an initial loan and Pressley told Sky Sports: “Rangers have been relatively quietly in the recent transfer window. They’ve only made one addition.

“I’m slightly concerned at this moment in time with their squad and with their recent additions to the squad in the last couple of transfer windows.

“There has been relative inactivity from Rangers in this transfer window. They’ve signed Sands from New York City and with Alfredo Morelos missing and Hagi for six months they need a couple of additions to the attacking aspect of the team.

“And also there is speculation regarding a number of players on the way out so not everything is completely rosy at Rangers although they are ahead in the Premiership. I think there are some difficult times ahead for them.

“Alfredo Morelos missing will have a very big impact. He’s there talisman and pivotal player and has really excelled under Giovanni so that’s potentially a major blow for Rangers.

“It’s going to be a terrific game the Old Firm derby. There is so much to play for. Celtic have managed to reduce the deficit and there’s a real feelgood factor at Celtic Park with the additions to the current squad.

“They’ve made a number of new signings so the momentum is slowly beginning to change and Rangers have to be extremely concerned with the inactivity and speculation surrounding some of their players.”

Van Bronckhorst is unbeaten since succeeding Steven Gerrard and what has been a smooth transition after the sudden departure of the title-winning former boss.

And Pressley said: “Giovanni has changed slightly the way they play. I was a big fan of the way Steven Gerrard went about things there.

“He built a very strong defensive team with a real ability to counter attack. That’s changed slightly, the tactical detail in terms of the defensive structure has certainly changed and I’m not sure it’s for the better.

“But he seems to have had some positive results thus far and the sounds coming out of Ibrox are that they like what he’s doing but I’ve yet to be convinced.”
