Steven Naismith in SPFL plea to do more for Scottish teams in Europe

Hearts technical director Steven Naismith insists the SPFL needs to do more to help the country’s teams in Europe.

Rosenborg went into last Thursday’s Europa Conference League second leg at Tynecastle on the back of being given the weekend off by the Norwegian football authorities.

Despite not having that luxury, Hearts still managed to complete a stirring comeback to set up a play-off clash with PAOK.

Thursday’s first leg at Tynecastle is Hearts’ sixth game in 20 days and Naismith admits a demanding run of games take its toll.

Naismith, who made six changes for Sunday’s 4-0 Viaplay Cup win over Partick Thistle, said: “It is something as a country we need to look at a bit better at.

"We need to make sure every Scottish team has the best chance to progress in Europe.

“Short term the coefficient being high has helped Scottish football with the five teams in Europe - it's amazing, fantastic for Scottish football everyone.

“There is an element that helps everyone, but as a country we do need to look at it a bit better. It will definitely help.

"You go through pre-season not having played a lot of competitive games then you have a lot of games crammed into a short period of time."
