Steven Gerrard to face Celtic as former Rangers boss lined up for emotional Liverpool return in legends clash

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will make an return to playing at Anfield next weekend against Celtic in a charity match.

The Anfield hero was Ibrox boss between 2018 and November 2021, when he left for Aston Villa, who sacked him earlier this season after less than a year in charge. Two teams of former players from both Liverpool and Celtic will turn out in Merseyside next weekend to raise funds for both charity wings of each club and Gerrard's involvement with the red side has been confirmed.

It will mean he faces off against heroes of the club he did battle with several times during his time in Scotland, where he guided Rangers to Premiership title 55 and ended Hoops hopes of 10-in-a-row. Gerrard has been spotted on punditry duties since his sacking from Aston Villa while also earning a slate of links back into the fiery world of management.

Trabzonspor of Turkey and the Polish national team have all been mentioned. Closer to home, Leeds United was one prominent link.
