Steven Gerrard tells Liverpool what they need to sign after Champions League final defeat

Steven Gerrard has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign a box-to-box midfielder after they tasted defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday night in Paris.

Liverpool were on top for much of the final, but failed to put the ball past Thibaut Courtois in the Madrid goal. After falling 1-0 behind, the Reds struggled to trouble the defence of the Spanish champions.

Aston Villa boss Gerrard, who was at the Stade de France supporting his former side, believes a midfielder who can hot double figures in terms of goals can vastly improve the Liverpool side.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, the Liverpool legend said: "Jordan and James Milner are not getting any younger. They’re still top players at this level, of course, and they’ll want to go on and do more.

"But for Liverpool, if you think about the next five, six, seven years, they’re going to need a midfielder, an eight, who can get goals, who can get double figures. They are heavily reliant on the front three – or the front five if you include Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

"But you always need one of those midfielders that’s going to get in the box and get you goals."

Liverpool have been linked with Monaco's Aurelien Tchouameni and Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham, but it remains to be seen if moves will be made for either of the young stars.
