Steven Gerrard sent 'shocked' message by ex-Liverpool defender amid Aston Villa struggles

Glen Johnson insists Steven Gerrard is the 'right man for the job' as Aston Villa boss after his former Liverpool team-mate came under scrutiny for his side's start to the Premier League season.

Villa have beaten Everton at Villa Park but have lost at Bournemouth and Crystal Palace either side of that victory. If reports are to be believed, Gerrard is under pressure to turn fortunes around in what is his first managerial job in the English top flight.

Things picked up on Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over League One Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup, however.

And Gerrard's former Liverpool and England team-mate Johnson told bettingodds.com : “I wouldn’t be worried, it’s early days. They performed well enough last season and I think there are about eight shocked clubs at the moment.

"I thought Villa were going to kick on. I didn’t see Arsenal doing what they’re doing, so I think there are a lot of surprises everywhere.

“I still think Villa have got the right man for the job. It’s a club going in the right direction and you’re going to lose some games. Everyone wants to get off to a great start to the season, so everyone is flying and fighting for fitness, so I think it’s way too early to get worried.”
