Steven Gerrard 'sacked' chants rain down on troubled Aston Villa boss as pressure builds after Chelsea defeat

Under-fire Steven Gerrard watched his toiling Aston Villa side become the architects of their own downfall in defeat to Chelsea while heaping further pressure on their beleaguered manager.

The 42-year-old is under increasing scrutiny and a pair of mistakes from Tyrone Mings and Emi Martinez set-up Mason Mount to bag a brace. Gerrard wasn't spared by the throng of travelling Blues supporters - a club he almost signed for in 2005 - as they goaded the Liverpool icon that he was getting 'sacked in the morning'.

Villa were lively in the first half, however, they found Chelsea understudy Kepa in inspired form with his point-blank save to thwart Danny Ings proving the pick of the bunch. But it was their inability to get out their own way that ultimately led to their downfall. Ming's bonkers back pass was seized upon by Mount before the England international made Martinez look silly with a looping free-kick which hit the back of the net.

Despite the ambition shown, it's another game without a win for Villa who have only secured two Premier League victories so far this season. A sizeable section of the supporters remain unconvinced over the former Rangers boss, however, attacking displays like the one against Graham Potter's side will likely capture hearts and minds.

But Gerrard is acutely aware results must now pick up if he is afforded more time to turn things around in the Midlands.
