Steven Gerrard has been sacked by Aston Villa after their 3-0 defeat at Fulham.
Liverpool legend Gerrard vowed to fight on following the humbling at Craven Cottage but Villa have decided to act.
A club statement read: "Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect."
A club spokesman said: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

Villa have won just two of their opening 11 games and currently sit 17th in the Premier League, level on points with Wolves and Leeds United.
Another toothless attacking performance at Craven Cottage allowed Fulham to take control from the off. Goals either side of half-time from Harrison Reed and Aleksandar Mitrovic handed the Cottagers a commanding lead and it got worse for Villa when Douglas Luiz was sent off before Tyrone Mings deflected in Neeskens Kebano's cross for an own goal.
Gerrard said after the game: “The performance was nowhere near good enough. The first half shocked me, particularly after the weekend (when Villa played well in losing 2-0 at home to Chelsea). I’ll try and find the answers but I won’t disrespect my players. We were excellent at the weekend but it’s very difficult to praise them after tonight."
And asked about being booed by the Villa fans and his own future, he added: “It’s tough but I’m a man and I accept it and I feel their frustration. It was a tough night for me personally.
“We’ll see what happens. I understand the situation we’re in. I’m a fighter and I will never, ever quit anything, certainly when it comes to football, so we’ll see what happens.”
