Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has this evening been sacked as manager by Premier League club Aston Villa.
The former England international midfielder was dismissed following the 3-0 defeat by Fulham, a result that leaves the Birmingham team just above the relegation zone having won only twice in the league this season. As manager, He had previously taken Glasgow Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years.
Gerrard succeeded Dean Smith as Villa manager in November 2021 after leaving his role at Scottish club Rangers. But the 42-year-old led Villa to only 13 wins from 40 games during his 11 months in charge. BirminghamLive.
Gerrard led Aston Villa to a 14th place finish last term but had been expected to push the Midlands outfit higher up the table in the new campaign.
“Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that head coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect,” said a Villa statement. “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”
