Steven Gerrard has been sacked after a poor start to the season at Aston Villa – and just 11 months in charge.
The former Rangers boss watched his 10-man side go down 3-0 to newly promoted Fulham on Thursday night to leave them 17th in the Premier League table. He left Rangers in the lurch to land a dream return to the English Premier League last November and had been heavily touted as a future replacement for Jurgen Klopp at his old team Liverpool.
But that dream role at Anfield now looks like a forlorn hope after the axe fell on Gerrard in the Midlands. He had been under serious pressure after his team racked up just two wins in nine to sit 16th in the table, staring down the barrel of a relegation scrap as the World Cup break approaches. And Villa have run out of patience and booted him out the door after travelling fans at Craven Cottage demanded he be sacked.
A Villa statement late on Thursday night read: "Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that head coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect."
And a club spokeperson said: "We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”
