Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa captaincy show of faith in John McGinn will provide 'huge boost'

Steven Gerrard's faith in making John McGinn his new Aston Villa captain will hand the Scotland international a 'huge boost'.

The former Hibs and St Mirren midfielder made the move south of the border when the English Premier League outfit were in the second tier. He played a major role in helping the club return to the riches of the EPL and has since established himself as one of the top midfielders in the league and a regular on the international scene with Scotland.

Former Rangers boss Gerrard is considered as one of the best midfield players and captains to ever play in the league during his time with Liverpool and former Celtic man Si Ferry reckons that show of faith from someone who has done it all in the game and so highly regarded throughout his career will help take the 27-year-old to the next level. He is also in no doubt that former Easter Road star McGinn has what it takes to be a top skipper.

The Open Goal Broomhill FC boss, speaking on behalf of Grosvenor Sport said: "Nobody deserves to be Aston Villa captain more than John McGinn. He's already a leader in the Scotland camp and he wanted to go and test himself in the Premier League [when he moved to Aston Villa]. He was never there just to take part.

"He's always the first person to meet us when we've filmed Open Goal during the international break and he always leads by example off the pitch.

"It must give him a huge boost to think that Steven Gerrard - who was one of the best captain's the Premier League has ever seen - wants him to be captain.

"McGinn taking on the captaincy will bring his game to another level and I have no doubt he'll be a great captain."
