Steven Gerrard rinsed by Aston Villa fans as former Rangers boss is questioned after Watford collapse

Frustrations are beginning to grow at Aston Villa after Steven Gerrard 's side lost to relegation battlers Watford on Saturday afternoon.

The former Rangers boss got off to a flying start when he arrived at Villa Park but things have hit the skids since Christmastime.

Villa have won just once in 2022 and Emmanuel Dennis' late strike means they now have just one win in their last eight games in all competitions.

They signed big in January with the arrivals of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne promising much but a victory over Everton last month remains their only success since December 14.

And Villa fans vented their frustration on social media with the Liverpool hero's decision-making called into question.

One supporter tweeted: "Well the Steven Gerrard honeymoon period is well and truly over. We've got two world class players in the midfield, yet all we do is get our wide players to lob needless balls into the box. Was the Young for Cash sub really necessary?"

Another said: "I actually believed that we would get more than 1 point out of the games against Newcastle and Watford, but apparently I was aiming way too high…"

Some criticisms were more to the point though as one simply read: "Steven Gerrard get in the bin."

A more measured response as another added: "Can safely say new manager bounce is well and truly over another meh performance."

While Ashley Young was also in the cross hairs for his role in the winner: "Absolute garbage the last few games. What was Young doing?"

It wasn't lost on Rangers fans either as one wrote: "Steven Gerrard must have sleepless nights. Imagine walking away from the Rangers job at the very early stages of your managerial career to go to that. What a howler. I bet Michael Beale tells him that sometimes too."

And another added: "It's all going a wee bit Pete tong for Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, meanwhile Rangers smash Dortmund in Germany."
