Steven Gerrard replaced by former Liverpool manager as favourite for next Crystal Palace boss

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was the early favourite to replace Patrick Vieira as Crystal Palace manager - but has now been leapfrogged by Roy Hodgson.

The London outfit took the decision to part ways with the former Arsenal captain on Friday morning after a run of 11 games without a win in the Premier League.

The Eagles are 12th but are just three points above the drop zone and their terrible form since the turn of the year has put them in the thick of the battle for survival.

Gerrard has been out of work since being sacked as Aston Villa boss back in October after a poor run of form made the home crowd turn against the ex-Liverpool captain.

The 42-year-old led the way in the early running after Vieira was sacked. But, at the time of writing, Gerrard has drifted to 25/1., according to BetVictor. Instead, it is former Liverpool boss Hodgson, who had a four-year spell in charge of Palace before announcing his retirement from management last season, who is the 1/1 favourite to make a shock return to Selhurst Park.

Hodgson is followed by Lucien Favre (5/1) and Jesse Marsh and Ralph Hasenhuttl (both 8/1).

A report this week suggested Gerrard is in the running to become the next manager of the England U21s.
