Steven Gerrard regrets Celtic Park celebrations and clashing with Neil Lennon while Rangers boss

Steven Gerrard has admitted he regrets his "over-the-top celebrations" after Rangers' win at Celtic Park in 2019.

And the current Aston Villa boss also revealed he clashed with Neil Lennon on the park as he whooped it up.

Gerrard rebuilt Rangers over the course of his three seasons, eventually overthrowing Celtic to end a 10-year wait for a top flight title last year.

There were a few false dawns though as it looked like they were on track to pry the title back in the 2019/20 season.

Rangers hadn't beaten the Hoops at Parkhead in 15 attempts heading into the New Year derby in 2019 but Nikola Katic's late header sealed a late victory that moved them to within two points of Neil Lennon's team – with a game in hand.

It all fell apart for Rangers after the break with Celtic surging out in front before the season was called early.

But at the time it appeared a seismic victory and Gerrard, who raced onto the pitch and reveals he clashed with Neil Lennon, says he repents the wild scenes.

Speaking on Gary Neville's The Overlap YouTube show, Gerrard admitted to letting hie emotional side get the better of him.

When asked if there was anything he could have done better, he said: "Maybe going into the media, answering a few questions where I thought, 'I shouldn't have said that, why did I let myself get there?'

"There was once where we beat Celtic at Celtic Park. There had been a lot of mud flying in the media with pundits and ex players, it's not that I go and look for it.

"We won at Celtic Park and I was probably a bit over the top with my celebrations, on the pitch and with Neil Lennon, which I regret.

"But at the same time it's like a constant wind-up from their side, all the success.

"I feel it. I'm emotional, I'm not perfect, but it's something I'm working on and getting better at.

"Balance is important. You've got to enjoy the wins because they're hard to get, and that's the good part.

"But at the same time people are looking to me and that's the reason it's important to be balanced."

That win was all the sweeter for Gerrard's side after they'd failed to beat Celtic in the Betfred Cup Final earlier that month.

They dominated the game at Hampden but Christopher Jullien's strike ensured their wait for a trophy continued.

Gerrard added: "It took time, it took a lot of set-backs tough days for us to get where we wanted to be and go toe to toe with Celtic.

"It was probably in year three before we did that. We should have won the League Cup in year two, we dominated them and that still doesn't sit well with me."
