Steven Gerrard officially ruled out of immediate return to British football

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been officially ruled out of an immediate return to British football after his departure from Saudi Arabia.

The Liverpool legend was reportedly in the running to be appointed the new boss of Carlisle United, although today, they announced that Mark Hughes got the job.

The 61-year-old has previously taken charge of a multitude of clubs, such as Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Bradford, Stoke City, and Southampton, as well as the Welsh national team.

He takes the place of Mike Williamson in the dugout at Brunton Park, officially ruling Gerrard, who famously led Rangers to their 55th title, out of a return to British football.

The Englishman recently departed his post with Saudi Arabian top-flight outfit Al-Ettifaq.

He 'resigned' from his job in the Middle East just last week, with Ally McCoist claiming that he wouldn't be surprised if, one day, Gerrard returned to Rangers.

McCoist told sports betting site talkSPORT BET: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox.

“He’s obviously held in really high regard by the supporters because of the league title he won, and his next job is going to be vitally important for him.

"Things haven’t gone according to plan for him after he left Rangers. A little bit like Frank Lampard going to Coventry – his next appointment was really important to him as well, so we’ll see what Steven ends up choosing to do with his career.

“I think at this moment in time however, the majority of Rangers fans have accepted that Philippe Clement has been given the backing of the board.

"In fairness to him, there’s been a steady improvement in performances and results – they did really well to finish in the top eight of the Europa League table, particularly given the strength of some of the teams that they played.

“Having said that, some of the performances away from home have been completely unacceptable. They’ve been really poor in some games.”

Gerrard left Ibrox after over three years in charge in 2021 for Aston Villa.
