Steven Gerrard makes "vintage" Philippe Coutinho claim after overhauling Jack Grealish

Steven Gerrard hailed a "vintage" display from Philippe Coutinho and tipped Jacob Ramsey to play for England after the pair inspired Aston Villa against Leeds.

Villa’s homegrown midfielder Ramsey, 20, scored twice in the first half by latching on to passes from Coutinho, who inspired a dramatic turnaround with a fine equaliser after Dan James’ opener.

He then produced up two intelligent assists for Ramsey, ensuring that he has as many assists as Jack Grealish this season following the former Villa captain's departure for Manchester City.

James then grabbed his second to make it 3-2 before the break and Diego Llorente stabbed in a second half equaliser as Ezri Konsa saw red in the closing stages for a second caution.

Coutinho was also subbed in the 78th minute after earlier going down holding his knee.

But Gerrard insisted it was just cramp and added: “It was vintage Philippe Coutinho.

“He seems happy, we have given the stage to go and enjoy his football again.

“His vision and his awareness, if you don’t love watching that you should stop watching football.”

Gerrard also tipped Ramsey to play for England after his brace.

It took the starlet’s tally to five goals this term and ex-Liverpool and England midfield dynamo Gerrard expects the England U21 international to soon get full honours.

He said: “It won’t be too long before the whole country is watching him.

“I know the level of the England players and he is right up there let me tell you.

“It is only a matter of time in my opinion.

“He is getting stronger and better every game.

“People are going to be watching.”

Leeds showed character to come back from 3-1 down to earn a point, with Wales star James to the fore in attack.

James said: “It was important to score that goal before half time to give us that lift.

“We were disappointed to concede those three in the first half, which were very similar goals, but we fought back.”

James now has four goals for the club since joining last August for £25million from Manchester United.

He added: “The gaffer keeps telling me to get in positions.

“I have to keep believing and pushing and making those runs.”
