Carlisle United are considering a sensational approach for former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as they battle to avoid relegation from English League Two.
Gerrard, who famously led Rangers to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in 2021, left his role with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq last week after 18 months in charge.
And now The Daily Mail claim that Carlisle’s American owners have floated the ambitious prospect of bringing the Liverpool legend to Brunton Park in a desperate bid to secure the club’s EFL status.
Carlisle are currently five points adrift from safety and sacked manager Mike Williamson on Monday despite backing him with 12 new additions during the winter transfer window.

While ex-Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt remains the bookmakers’ favourite, it's believed that Gerrard’s name has been discussed at boardroom level.
His appointment would be seen as a long shot, given his previous stints at Rangers and Aston Villa, but Carlisle’s new owners - who took control in November 2023 - are reportedly exploring all options following the dismissal of former Newcastle United defender Williamson.
