Steven Gerrard in life after Rangers reality check as step down urged after failure to build on 'flying' Ibrox start

Steven Gerrard has been told he might need to take a job he didn't think he needed to upon leaving Rangers.

The Liverpool legend left Ibrox in November 2021 with his stock high, reclaiming the Premiership title the May before his exit and guiding thee club into Europa League knockout rounds during his tenure. But his move to Aston Villa lasted less than a year, sacked by the Premier League side last Spetember and he has been out of management since.

Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq offered a route back in but Gerrard stepped in to dispel the rumours earlier this week after choosing not to pursue the middle-east riches after a visit to them. Ex-Reds star Danny Murphy tells talkSPORT he was surprised to see the former midfielder knock back the offer, as he may need to take a job that he perhaps thought was beneath him upon moving to the EPL. Murphy explained: "I thought while he was over there, the lucrative aspect of it and the way they would have made him feel welcome, I thought he might be reeled in.

"But he has shown some courage and substance there. The one thing I know about Stevie is, he loves football, He loves a challenge and he loves trying to prove people wrong.

"That journey he did amazingly well as a footballer and as a manager now, he has taken some steps forward and gone backwards. He is going to have to take a challenge that maybe he did not anticipate he was going to have to, when he started flying at Rangers.

"And maybe something is in the pipeline that we didn't know last week when we were talking about it. He will challenge himself to do that."
