Steven Gerrard believes that he and the Aston Villa squad have what it takes to end their slump and get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
The Villians have picked up nine points from their first 10 games in the campaign, which leaves them sitting 16th in the league table, just a single point clear of the relegation zone. Despite the arrival of Diego Carlos, Leander Dendoncker and the permanent signing of Philippe Coutinho, the Birmingham club have been struggled to score goals this season, whilst looking increasingly vulnerable in their own back line.
Sunday's 2-0 home loss to Chelsea means that former Rangers boss Gerrard's side are the second lowest goal scorers in the Premier League so far this season, having netted just seven times in 10 matches. Speculation has been rife about the future of the Liverpool's legend's position at Villa Park, with reports suggesting that time is running out for the 41-year old.
But speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday nights trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham, Gerrard was adamant that he and his players are fully focussed on putting an end to their poor run of form.
He said: "You need to use tough days as motivation for when the better days come. This is a tough period but it's a great challenge.
"I see the players, I see the character and the determination. I see how much they put into their daily routine and if we stick together and we keep believing, the results will change. I have total trust and confidence in myself and this group of players."
Big money signing Philippe Coutinho has struggled this season after sealing a permanent switch from Barcelona, but Gerrard has leapt to the defence of the Brazilian international, who he played alongside at Liverpool for two years. He said: "I have full confidence and belief in Phil. We will give him every bit of support he needs, you don't lose talent and you don't lose class. He blew the roof of Villa Park, he blew everyone's imagination, it's still there."
A huge error from Tyrone Mings lead to Chelsea taking the lead on Sunday, before the heroics of Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga prevented Villa from getting back into the game, but Gerrard insists that he isn't feeling sorry for himself in the current situation the club find themselves in. "I won't feel sorry for myself", he added. "We'll accept the outcome of the game because it is what it is. The performance for large parts of that game was really good and I'm proud of what the players gave. We'll certainly take the positives out of the game individually and collectively, and if we can sustain that we will get a break or that bit of luck."
