Steven Gerrard 'has a week' to save Aston Villa job as former Rangers boss comes under owner's scrutiny

Steven Gerrard has a week to save his Aston Villa job, according to a report.

The former Rangers boss has been in the Villa Park hotseat for just under a year, leaving Ibrox last November following an historic 55th title win that ended Celtic’s dreams of clinching an unprecedented tenth Scottish Premiership title in a row. But now the Telegraph reports he has just seven days to convince the club’s owners that he’s still the man to lead them after a poor start to the 2022/23 season.

The Villains are unbeaten in their last four matches, but have won only one of them. The narrow victory away at Southampton was just their second league success of the season after beating Everton 2-1 in the second week of the campaign. They sit just three points above the relegation zone after drawing with ten-man Leeds and Nottingham Forest ahead of taking on Chelsea at home this Sunday.

Club owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are expected to be at the game this weekend, with the performance and result likely to go some way to determining whether Gerrard has a future in charge of the Midlands outfit.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Gerrard insisted “all is not wrong” in the camp, but acknowledges that things must improve for him to get more time in the job. He said: “We know – and I’ll say it as loud as you want me to say it – that we’re not firing on all cylinders,” he told a press conference.

“But there’s also a lot of things right in terms of how we look. Our structure defensively, the effort and commitment of the boys, we’re getting a lot of players back into better form.

“We know that the last bit, the execution part, will come. Players will step forward and take these moments. A little bit of confidence or belief in a big moment or a bit of luck can go in our favour and we can get there and start firing on all cylinders.

“All is not wrong in my eyes. I’m seeing a lot of good stuff. The players are seeing that as well and we’re reminding them of it.

“When you say, ‘four games unbeaten’, it sounds better than it is because we know the last two should have been six points from six, and we’d have been talking about the best place Villa have been in since I’ve been in the door.

“The margins are small and fine but we’re well aware of where we should be. That’s on me and that’s on us.”
